Four ways to get a design onto a garment. They are good at genuinely different things, and the right one is mostly decided by your quantity and your artwork.
Here is the honest comparison, and then the part where you find out you probably do not have to choose at all.
If you only read one section, read this one.
No setup cost, unlimited colors, and photographs are fine. The only sensible choice on a small run.
Cheaper per piece, tougher, and it gets better the bigger the run. The default for teams, staff and merch.
A different look entirely. Reads as more expensive because it is, and it will never crack or fade.
Same design, four different processes, and four quite different sets of trade-offs.

Durability assumes a properly cured print and normal washing. Any of these will outlast a garment that gets tumble dried on high every week.
Ink pushed through a mesh stencil, one screen per color, cured with heat. It is the oldest method here and it is still the best one for volume, which is not an accident.
The deposit is thicker than anything digital can lay down, so colors are denser and the print survives a lot of washing. On a dark garment a screen-printed white reads properly white rather than grey.
The cost is in the setup. Every color in your design needs its own screen burned and registered, and that work happens once whether you print twelve shirts or twelve hundred. Spread across a big run it disappears. Spread across a small one it dominates.

Direct to film. The artwork prints onto a coated film, adhesive powder is applied and melted, and the whole thing is heat pressed onto the garment.
It has quietly become the most useful method for small orders. No setup, unlimited colors, works on cotton, polyester, blends and things screen printing struggles with, and the color is genuinely vivid on dark garments.
The trade-off is that it sits on the fabric rather than in it, so you can feel it more than a DTG print. Modern DTF is not the cracking peeling vinyl of two decades ago, but it is still a layer on top rather than part of the shirt.

Direct to garment. An inkjet printer sprays water-based ink straight into the fibres of the shirt. The print becomes part of the fabric, so at its best you can barely feel it.
It is superb for full-colour artwork on cotton in small quantities. Photographs, gradients, illustrations with dozens of shades, all handled without a thought about color count.
It wants cotton. On polyester and heavy blends the ink has nothing to bond into, and on very dark garments it needs a white underbase that firms up the hand feel. Slower per piece than everything else here, which is why it does not scale.

Thread stitched through the garment by a multi-needle machine reading a digitized file. It is not really competing with the other three, because it is going for a different look entirely.
Embroidery reads as expensive. On a polo, a cap, a jacket or a fleece it does something no print can, and it will not crack, fade or peel because there is no ink involved at all.
It has two real limits. Fine detail and small text disappear below a certain size because a stitch can only be so small, and every logo needs a one-time digitizing charge to convert the artwork into a stitch path. That charge makes embroidery awkward on a single piece and irrelevant on a dozen.

Given enough size and stitch count, embroidery handles far more detail than people expect.
You almost never have to make this decision. The studio prices your job as both screen printing and DTF and quotes you the cheaper of the two automatically. You pick embroidery when you want embroidery. Everything else, we sort out behind the scenes and you keep the saving.
Every time you change the quantity, the artwork or the print locations, the studio runs the numbers twice. Once as a screen-printed job with the screens your design would need, and once as a digital transfer priced on the area the art covers.
Then it shows you the lower of the two. You never see which one won, because from your side it does not change anything about the order.
In practice a one-color design crosses over to screen printing somewhere around a dozen pieces, a four-color design around two dozen, and a big full-colour design closer to four dozen. All of which is a long way of saying that if you are ordering more than a couple of dozen shirts, you are probably getting screen printing.
This is the same design at the same quantities, priced both ways. The point where the columns swap is the point where the studio switches you over.

Put your artwork in and the price appears. Whichever method wins, you get the cheaper one and you do not have to think about any of the above.
If you want embroidery instead, choose it in the studio and the pricing switches to stitch count.
Properly cured screen printing and embroidery. Screen printing lays a thicker deposit of ink that is bonded into the fabric, and embroidery is thread stitched through it, so there is nothing to crack or peel. Both will comfortably outlive the garment.
DTG sprays ink directly into the fabric of the garment, so it feels like part of the shirt but only works well on cotton. DTF prints onto a film first and heat presses that onto the garment, so it works on almost any fabric and the color pops harder, at the cost of sitting slightly on top.
No, and it is worth saying clearly. The vinyl and transfer paper of twenty years ago cracked and peeled. Modern DTF is a flexible printed film with proper adhesive and it survives washing perfectly well. It is a genuinely different product that happens to be applied in a similar way.
Yes, with DTG or DTF. Screen printing can reproduce a photograph through halftones but it is expensive and it is not what it is best at. If your artwork is a photo or has gradients, digital is the right call.
It depends entirely on quantity. Under about two dozen pieces digital wins because there is no setup. Above that screen printing wins and keeps winning, because setup spreads out and the per-piece printing cost is far lower.
Not for printing. The studio prices your job as both screen printing and DTF and gives you the cheaper one automatically. You choose embroidery, because that is a genuinely different look, not a cheaper route to the same one.
