Sun Is The Occupational Hazard

Working on open water means sun from above and sun reflected off the surface, for eight to twelve hours, every day of a season. Charter crews and commercial fishermen accumulate more UV exposure than almost any other outdoor trade, and clothing is the only protection that does not wash off or get forgotten.

That is why custom fishing charter apparel skews so heavily toward long sleeve. A long sleeve sun shirt is not a fashion decision on a boat, it is standard equipment, and crews that switch rarely go back.

Long sleeve as default

Covers forearms through a full day on deck. The most requested piece in custom fishing crew apparel by a wide margin.

Light colors

Reflect heat rather than absorbing it. Dark charter boat shirts are punishing in midsummer and crews stop wearing them.

Quick-dry fabric

Everything gets wet. Cotton stays wet, chafes, and holds smell. Performance blends dry between runs.

A note on honesty here. Some garments carry a formal UPF rating and many do not. If you specifically need rated sun-protective fabric for your custom fishing charter shirts, say so and we will source garments that carry the rating rather than assuming a light long sleeve does the same job. Plenty of crews are perfectly happy with standard performance long sleeve, but the two are not the same thing and it is worth being clear which you are buying.

Charter Customers Buy Shirts, Commercial Crews Wear Them

The two halves of this industry want almost opposite things from branded apparel, and it is worth being clear which one you are ordering for.

A charter operation is in the experience business. Your customers have paid for a day they will remember, and a good number of them will buy a shirt on the dock afterward if one is available. Custom fishing charter shirts sold at the end of a successful trip convert extremely well, because the customer is buying the memory rather than the garment. Name the boat, name the water, keep your logo present but secondary.

Commercial fishing is the opposite. Nobody is buying a souvenir. The apparel is workwear that has to survive gear, salt, weather, and long hours, and the branding exists so a crew looks like an outfit rather than a collection of individuals. Durability wins over everything, and embroidered jackets that last several seasons matter more than tees.

Plenty of operations do both, running charters in season and commercial work outside it. If that is you, order the durable crew layer once and the sellable charter merch on a seasonal cycle. They are different garments serving different jobs and buying one blank for both leaves you with workwear nobody wants to buy and merch that falls apart on deck.

What Salt Air Does To Printing And Stitching

Marine environments are harder on branded apparel than almost anywhere else, and the failure modes are specific enough to design around.

Embroidery thread choice matters most. Polyester thread holds color under sustained UV and shrugs off salt. Rayon thread looks slightly richer on day one and fades noticeably by the end of a season, which is why every piece of custom fishing charter apparel we stitch runs polyester by default.

Screen printing behaves differently. The ink itself survives salt fine, but repeated soaking, sun, and hard washing crack thick plastisol along fold lines. Softer water-based prints flex with the fabric and hold up considerably better on charter boat shirts that get wet daily.

Then there is the garment. Salt is abrasive once it dries in the fibres, so anything worn on deck wears faster than the same shirt worn ashore. This is not a reason to buy cheap, it is a reason to buy fabric that tolerates it. Performance blends handle salt far better than soft ring-spun cotton.

For jackets and outer layers, embroidery beats printing outright. A print on a waxed or coated shell has nothing to bond to and will lift. Stitching goes through the fabric and stays there, which is why custom embroidered fishing jackets outlive every printed layer on the boat.

One small practical thing. Rinse branded gear in fresh water at the end of a trip, same as you would rinse a reel. It costs nothing and roughly doubles how long custom fishing crew apparel looks presentable.

Tournaments, Seasons, and Repeat Customers

Charter fishing has a rhythm that rewards planning apparel around it. Tournaments, peak species runs, and the opening of a season all concentrate demand into short windows where branded gear does unusual amounts of work.

Tournaments are the obvious one. A boat competing in a named tournament is photographed, weighed in publicly, and talked about locally. Custom fishing charter shirts worn by a crew at a weigh-in reach an audience of exactly the people who book charters. If you fish tournaments at all, time an apparel order to land before the first one rather than after.

Repeat customers matter more here than in most industries. A good charter builds a book of clients who return annually, often with the same group, and those people genuinely want the shirt. A boat that offers branded apparel to returning parties converts at rates a retail shop would envy, because the purchase is about the relationship rather than the garment.

That suggests keeping a small standing stock rather than one big annual order. A dozen shirts in common sizes aboard means you never miss a sale on a day when a group has had a great trip. Reorders skip setup, so topping up a few times a season costs little.

Species-specific designs work well for boats with a clear speciality. A shirt naming the fish rather than the company sells better to a customer who came specifically for that species, and it dates far more slowly than anything with a year on it.

Skip dated tournament merch unless you are certain it sells out. A shirt naming a specific year's event is unsellable the following spring, and boats rarely have anywhere to store it.

Charter and Fishing Apparel Questions

What is the best shirt for a charter crew?

A light-colored performance long sleeve. It covers arms through a full day of sun, dries between runs, and does not develop the smell wet cotton gets. Most custom fishing charter shirts we print for working crews are long sleeve blends rather than cotton tees.

Do you offer rated UPF sun shirts?

We can source garments that carry a formal UPF rating if you need it. A standard light long sleeve offers real coverage but is not the same as a rated garment, so tell us on the quote form which you actually want rather than assuming.

Should charter merch name the boat or the company?

The boat, usually. Customers remember the vessel they spent the day on far more than the operating company. Custom fishing charter shirts naming the boat and the water sell noticeably better as dockside merch than a corporate logo tee.

Can you embroider onto waxed and coated jackets?

Yes, and for those garments embroidery is the only sensible option. Print does not bond to waxed or coated shells and will lift. Stitching goes through the material and stays, which is why custom embroidered fishing jackets last so well.

How many crew shirts per person on a boat?

Three at minimum for a working season. Everything gets soaked and there is rarely laundry capacity mid-trip. Ordering three custom fishing crew shirts per person up front is far cheaper than small top-up runs later.

Do you print for tackle shops as well as boats?

Regularly. Tackle shop merch behaves like normal retail rather than workwear, so softer blanks and more interesting artwork make sense there. Plenty of operations run shop retail and charter crew apparel together in one order to share setup.
