The Print Area On A Tank Is Narrower Than You Think

A tank top loses the shoulder and most of the upper chest to the armhole cut, so the usable print area is noticeably narrower than the same size tee. A design that fills a shirt front will run into the binding on a tank.

Wide horizontal artwork suffers most. Vertical designs, centered wordmarks, and smaller chest hits sit better. The studio shows the actual blank, so you can see where the armhole starts before you commit to a layout.

Best blank for a custom tank A soft unisex jersey tank in combed ring-spun cotton. One cut that works across a group.
Usable print width Narrower than a tee. The armhole cut takes the shoulder and upper chest out of play.
Typical custom tank order Event and gym orders run 24 to 144. Retail runs sit higher.
Best time to order Spring, ahead of the summer rush. It costs the same and avoids the queue.

Racerback, Unisex Jersey, Or Heavy Garment-Dyed

A racerback is cut for movement and reads athletic. It is light, it is the cheapest of the three, and it is the obvious pick for gyms, races, and anything people will sweat in.

A unisex jersey tank is the safe group order because one cut works across a whole staff or crew. A heavy garment-dyed tank is the retail option, noticeably thicker with a broken-in feel that people keep wearing after the event.

Why Olive Branch Apparel

The armhole takes the shoulder

Usable print width is narrower than a tee. The studio shows the real blank so your layout does not run into the binding.

The cheapest run we do

Less fabric, cheaper blanks, same decoration cost. Tanks in volume are the best value order on the site.

Order in spring

Demand compresses into a few months and everyone orders at once. Early costs the same and skips the queue.

No minimum on tanks

One tank is a real order. The per-piece price drops sharply as the count rises.

Tanks Are A Seasonal Order, So Time It

Tank top demand is compressed into a few months, which means everyone orders at once. If you need tanks for a summer event or a retail season, ordering in spring costs the same and avoids the queue everyone else is stuck in.

The other advantage of ordering early is that you can reorder. A tank that sells out in June is worth restocking in July, but only if the first order left you enough time to notice.

What A Custom Tank Top Order Costs

Tanks use less fabric than tees and the blanks are usually cheaper, so a run of tanks generally lands under the equivalent run of shirts. The decoration cost per piece is effectively the same.

The same volume breaks apply as everything else. Set your count in the studio above and the price steps down visibly as you raise it.

Three Very Different Buyers For Custom Tank Tops

Gyms and fitness studios want light, cheap, and racerback. The tanks get sweated in and washed constantly, so a poly-cotton blend that dries fast beats a heavy cotton that stays damp. Volume is usually high and the design is usually simple.

Races and events want the same lightness for a different reason. Custom tank tops for a summer race are worn once at the event and then occasionally afterwards, so the job is to survive the day and look good in photographs. Order five to ten percent over your confirmed count.

Retail is the outlier. A tank somebody buys has to justify the price against everything else on the rack, which means a heavier garment-dyed blank and a design worth owning. It is the only one of the three where paying more for the blank reliably makes you more money.

Design Your Own Tank Top Questions

Why is the print area smaller on a tank top?

The armhole cut removes the shoulder and most of the upper chest, so the usable width is narrower than the same size tee. Wide horizontal artwork runs into the binding. Vertical layouts and centered wordmarks sit better.

Are custom tank tops cheaper than t-shirts?

Generally yes. Tank blanks use less fabric and cost less, while the decoration price per piece is effectively identical. A run of tanks usually lands under the equivalent run of shirts.

What is the difference between a racerback and a jersey tank?

A racerback is cut athletic and light, which suits gyms and races. A unisex jersey tank is a straight cut that works across a whole staff or crew, which makes it the easier bulk order to place.

When should I order tanks for a summer event?

Spring. Tank demand compresses into a few months and everyone places their order at once, so ordering early costs the same and skips the queue.

Can I get a heavier tank than the standard?

Yes. A 6.1 oz garment-dyed tank is noticeably thicker with a broken-in feel, and it is the version people keep wearing after the event rather than the one they retire.

Do you print on the back of tank tops?

Yes, and the back is often the better canvas because the armhole takes less out of it. Each location prices separately as you add it.
